A LITTLE ABOUT CBD

By: Matthew Criscione, Grower Rep @ Oregon’s Finest

Recently, one of the biggest re-discoveries concerning cannabis is also the second most concentrated cannabinoid in cannabis – CBD. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (Cannabidiol) are the two most abundant naturally occurring cannabinoids with THC accounting for 12-25% and CBD for 1-4% on average. THC and CBD act like siblings in a family.  Sometimes they work together, and sometimes they seem to live to antagonize each other.  Unlike CBD, THC is a psychoactive compound (meaning it affects brain function by acting on the central nervous system, which can result in altering your mood, behavior, perception and cognition) and its effects are what cannabis users feel the most when ingested. It also has medicinal uses for a multitude of symptoms including mild to moderate pain, insomnia, depression, nausea and appetite loss just to name a few. For some people though, THC may cause anxiety or paranoia.

CBD, on the other hand, is generally considered a non-psychoactive compound, although some would argue that the sedative feelings would qualify as such.  Its effects are sedative, and responsible for the relief most people look for medicinally.  Some of the more interesting properties of CBD treat ailments from inflammation and nausea, to diabetes, PTSD, schizophrenia, rheumatoid arthritis, epilepsy, cardiovascular disease, anti-psychotic, anti-anxiety and can act as a painkiller/anti-inflammatory against muscle spasms or neuropathic pain, which are traditionally harder to treat with any medicine, even pharmaceutically.

Oregon’s Finest typically carries multiple strains of CBD flower by a variety of farms.  sofresh farms grows two amazing CBD offerings. First, their Harley Tsu, a high CBD, low THC flower that is classified as a Sativa Hybrid strain, carries tasty citrus notes.  The relaxing effects take hold immediately and last throughout the experience. The second CBD flower is the Stephen Hawking Kush. For those who are looking for a lighter, more euphoric experience, this is a great option. The current cutting is sitting at just around 6% THC and 15% CBD (each harvest will be slightly different).  This Indica Hybrid flower might not exactly unlock the secrets of the universe as the name might suggest, but it will leave you pondering your place in it.  With just enough THC to feel its effects, the CBD really gets to show off its effect with the added help of her THC sibling. Ideal Farms have been very busy perfecting the amazing sleep inducing Indica Pennywise.  What I like to call a “balanced flower,” the 50/50 balance of THC/CBD brings out the full potential of the cannabis flower. The Sour Tsunami by Lion Tree is an outdoor strain, grown in the sun-drenched valleys of Southern Oregon.  This lady has more of an herbal, possibly alfalfa smell, however, the CBD effects are more pronounced as the CBD in this little girl sits at a hefty 23% on average!

Oregon’s Finest carries a variety of extracts, oils, and edibles that are CBD dominate as well. Echo Electuary has some amazing locally sourced honey products and ginger chews.  That Taffy has a very tasty and effective mixed berry CBD taffy. Last but not least, Dirty Arm Farm’s Adabinol (cannabis infused syrup); some of the highest CBD available to rec customers at this time.
