Ok. There is a craze happening over the last few years and it involves a little cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant called CBD. CBD, which is also known as Cannabidiol, is one of the largest compounds found in the cannabis plant. However, dependent on the strain itself, it may be more present in some strains versus others. CBD is known for it’s little-to-no psychoactive effects when using it to medicate. This characteristic alone can account for the tremendous hype surrounding CBD. It makes plant strains that are high in CBD ideal for patients who need strictly pain relief without the feeling of being high, allowing them to function throughout daily tasks and not feel cloudy. Another beneficial attribute of CBD is not only is it seen to neutralize the effects of THC; offering protection against overmedication, but it also helps the body absorb the THC itself.

Great examples of patients who benefit from this strain in particular are children with illnesses that hinder their day to day life.

We started hearing talk of CBD a few years back when parents administered a high-CBD strain of cannabis to their ailing daughter, Charlotte. Because of the success this high-CBD formula brought to her (almost eliminating her constant seizures due to epilepsy) a set of brothers (The Stanley Brothers) started growing a strain in dedication to Charlotte. Charlotte’s Web (the strain) has been one of the most talked about strains to date and parents from all over the United States flocked to Colorado at the time to try and find relief for their children as well. Fortunately, now there are a handful of high-CBD strains available to patients whom are seeing the same incredible results.

Some of the main ailments CBD is shown to counter-act and sometimes eliminate are:

  1. Epilepsy
  2. Tumors or Cancerous cells
  3. Inflammatory Disorders
  4. Neurodegenerative Disorders
  5. Psychosis Disorders
  6. Nausea

The down fall? Because cannabis is still a federally regulated drug, little clinical studies have been done; but personal stories that have been shared throughout the community do the talking. CBD is really something.

A few strains to name that are high in CBD are as follows, but aren’t limited to:

  1. Charlotte’s Web
  2. Harlequin
  3. ACDC
  4. Otto

The more we learn about the benefits of CBD, the more products that are being created that contain high doses. Not only are we seeing it in the flower itself, but growers are creating extract-versions of this (like what was administered to Charlotte) in oil form, shatter/BHO form, and even edibles now. This is a fantastic step in the right direction because it only expands the amount of patients who can utilize such an amazing attribute of the cannabis plant itself.
